holiday gift giving etiquetteIt is always difficult to buy the perfect gift for someone you are dating, no matter how long you’ve been with them. Some people may not be that interested in the whole idea of exchanging gifts, while it may seem like other already have everything leaving you lost. Now, what if you just started seeing someone you met on a dating site? Should you plan to buy this person a holiday gift? Should you wait a certain amount of time to pass in your relationship before giving gifts? Here are some tips on holiday gift giving etiquette.

Dating More Than One Person

If you are in the stage of your life where you are most comfortable dating multiple men or women, don’t try and waste your time by buying each of them a gift. Gift giving can lead to mixed feelings and confusion about a relationship. It may come off as a gesture that you want to be more serious with one person over the others. Make sure, if you are dating multiple people, that you are always open with your feeling towards everyone equally. That way it will be less messy in the end.

First-Time Giving

If you have only been together with your significant other for a short period of time it is important that you tread carefully in the gift-giving waters. Anything too extravagant may make him or her feel uncomfortable and pressured into your relationship. A good idea for a first gift is to plan on spending the evening together. Have a nice romantic meal and enjoy each others company. If you really want to purchase a gift, make it small and inexpensive. Again, spending a lot of money can scare someone away really easily.

Difference In Salary

If you are comfortable in your salary you need to make sure that you don’t go overboard with the spending. The last thing you want to do is make your date feel uncomfortable about receiving a gift that cost way more than he or she spent on you based on the fact that he or she doesn’t make nearly as much as you. Your best bet if you are in this situation is to play it slow with the gift giving and wait for his or her birthday to try out something more “expensive” to see what type of reaction you get. Since birthdays are all about giving and not receiving in return, he or she will feel no pressure about not getting you anything in return.
