Many of us who are just a little bit older can remember a line in a melancholy song from the 1980’s that puts forth the theory that old lovers can make good friends. There is no doubt that the concepts of Friends dating romance, love and of course sex can be a bit hard to navigate at best, and it can be a real feat if not a miracle for old lovers to be able to morph into close friends.
Yes, the song makes it sound like it is the easiest thing in the world to do, but for any of us that have ever tried we know that sometimes it is just impossible, and other times it can work with a lot of desire and hard work on the part of both parties.
The only way to really have any sort of shot at changing the nature of what was a very serious romantic relationship is if things ended in a non-confrontational way. If both parties realized that is was over and parted way amicably, then there is a definite chance that a friendship can be built. As it would be somewhat unusual for both people to decide that something is over at precisely the same moment, it is a good bet that someone will have their feelings hurt even if the outcome is what they knew they wanted in the long run. Patience and understanding can certainly overcome this situation if the two parties want the friendship badly enough though.
If the romance relationship ended in a lot of fighting, animosity or a bitter divorce, the odds are strongly against the friends dating involved being able to form any sort of friendship. Sometimes there are just two many things that would have to be overcome in order for us to be able to start over with a clean slate.
The best thing to do is to use your best judgement, don’t push it, and accept whatever outcome occurs naturally.
